Fall Welcome Student Engagement Sessions
Student Engagement Sessions provide an opportunity for faculty to interact with new students in a seminar format (average number of attendees is 50). Faculty members wishing to present sessions need to determine the topic to be covered and the session format. Past sessions presented by faculty include: "I Found It On The Web So It Must Be True"; "The Head, The Heart, and The Machine"; "So You Want To Be A Doctor?"; "Journey Toward Self Discovery and Life Knowledge: Breaking Out Of The Matrix"; and "After 9-11, What Are Human Rights?"
If you are interested in presenting a session during Fall Welcome 2008, please review the Engagement Session Format Information found below. Please submit a completed Engagement Session Information Form to the Department of Student Life (Attn: Student Engagement Sessions) by no later than Monday, May 21, 2008. Engagement Session Format Information
Overview of Engagement Sessions on Thursday, August 21, 2008
Two clusters of engagement sessions are offered. The first is from 9:30 to 11:50 a.m. The second is from 1:30 to 3:50 p.m. Half of the entering students will attend the morning engagement sessions and the other half will attend the afternoon sessions. Because of this structure, please offer sessions in both the morning and the afternoon so that all new students will have the opportunity to attend your sessions. Three 45-minute time slots will be offered in the morning and three will be offered in the afternoon. While you are encouraged to offer sessions for all six time slots (three in the morning and three in the afternoon), I am happy to explore other alternatives that may be less of a strain on your department.
The Thursday engagement session times are:
9:30 a.m. - 10:10 a.m.
10:20 a.m. - 11 a.m.
11:10 a.m. - 11:50 a.m.
1:30 p.m. - 2:10 p.m.
2:20 p.m. - 3 p.m.
3:10 p.m. - 3:50 p.m.
Overview of Engagement Sessions on Friday, August 22, 2008
Three 35-minute engagement sessions will be offered from 10 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. Unlike Thursday, where half of the new students attend in the morning and the other half in the afternoon, all new students are expected to attend the Friday morning engagement sessions. In spite of this expectation, the total number of new students who attend on Friday historically has been lower than on Thursday. Because each engagement session will compete with others for student attendance, please plan to present at all three engagement session time slots. This will ensure that a maximum number of new students will have the opportunity to attend your sessions.
The Friday Engagement Session times are:
10 a.m. - 10:35 a.m.
10:45 a.m. - 11:20 a.m.
11:30 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.
If you plan to offer engagement sessions during this year's Fall Welcome, please return the attached session description form no later than Friday, May 19 (prior to May 19 is certainly welcome).
